Harry Slocum, Jr.

Harry Slocum, Jr.
90, New Hope Community
1927 - 2018

Harry Slocum, Jr. passed away peacefully on September 27, 2018. He was known to his family as "Junior", "June Bug", or "Granddaddy Junior". To many others he was known as the "Fruit Man" or "Train Man". His stubbornness, sense of humor, twisting, and making that train whistle are all characteristics of him that will be forever remembered and make us smile a little.

Junior was born on October 8, 1927 in Marion County, the son of Harry Slocum and Fleeda Pittman Slocum. At a young age, he married the love of his life, Rose Pounds, and together they raised three handsome boys. He lived in downtown New Hope all his life where he ran a fruit stand, helped manage a family logging business, and helped Rose run a country grocery store. Junior was a member of New Hope Baptist Church where he could be found most every Sunday on the left back row.

He is survived by his two sons: Darron (Brenda) and Brent (Susan); daughter-in-law, Deborah; seven grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren; and his sister, Bonnie.

He is preceded in death by his sister, Edwina; parents, Harry Slocum and Fleeda Pittman Slocum; son, Garry Slocum; grandson, Troy Slocum; and his loving wife Rose Pounds Slocum.

A celebration of the life of Harry Slocum, Jr. will be held at 2:00 on Sunday, September 30, 2018 at New Hope Baptist Church. A visitation will be from 5:00 - 9:00 on Saturday, September 29th and Sunday, September 30th at 1:00.

Pallbearers for the service will be Nick Davis, Alan Herrington, Mark Kroner, Terry Pounds, Codie Slocum, and Ben White. Honorary pallbearers will be Denson Pittman and Brett Slocum.
