Obituary

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM on Tuesday, November 10, 2026 at Ebeneezer Baptist Church in Bassfield for Shirley Hartfield, 89, of Carson, who passed away Saturday, November 7, 2026. Interment will follow at Ebeneezer Baptist Church Cemetery. Rev. Tom Martin and Rev. Richie Pittman will officiate the services.

The Hartfield family will receive guests on Tuesday morning from 11:00 AM until 1:00 PM at Ebeneezer Baptist Church in Bassfield.

Mrs. Hartfield was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother who loved her family dearly. She met her husband in Houston, Texas, when they were set up on a blind date. Their first date was a trip to the drive-in movies, accompanied by her five children. They were married on May 5, 1964.

A member of Ebenezer Baptist Church, Mrs. Hartfield was a woman of strong faith who spent time each day reading her Bible and praying. She was especially proud of her grandson who became a preacher and her granddaughter who served as a church music leader.

Mrs. Hartfield was an excellent cook, known for her homemade biscuits and chicken and dumplings. On one occasion, she stayed up until 2 a.m. baking a cake for Kim to enter in the State Fair, where it won first place. She also had a green thumb and took pride in her beautiful flower beds. She loved fishing from the bank with a cane pole and would happily stay there all day if given the chance.

She was preceded in death by her Parents, Tom and Ella Peel Walker; one Brother, and a number of Brothers & Sisters.

She is survived by her Husband of 62 years, Charles L. Hartfield, of Carson; three Sons, John Hartfield, of Carson, Bo Hartfield (Diane), of Colmesneil, Texas, Arnold White, of Hernando, Florida; four Daughters, Kim Gruber (Ron), of Kearney, Nebraska, Peggy Rumfolo, of Dayton, Texas, Mary Wallace (Andy), of Hattiesburg, Pam Hatfield (Clay), of Indiana; sixteen Grandchildren; and twenty-three Great Grandchildren.

Mrs. Hartfield will be carried to her final resting place by those honored to serve as Pallbearers: Mickie Maharaj, Alex Broome, Joshua Lee, Eddie McRaney, Jonathon Simms, and Calvin Simms, Jeffrey Lee, and Wyatt Rodriguez.

Hathorn Funeral Home in Columbia is in charge of the arrangements. Family and friends may sign an online guestbook at www.hathornfuneralhome.com.
