Obituary

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 pm on Friday, April 25, 2025, at Hathorn Funeral Home in Columbia for Patricia Ann Purvis, 85, of Columbia, who entered Heaven's gates on Monday, April 21, 2025, at St. Catherine's Village in Madison.  Interment will be in Woodlawn Cemetery in Columbia. Dr. Bryant Barnes and Rev. Tom Thurman will officiate the services.

The Purvis family will receive friends for visitation on Friday morning from 11:00 am up until the hour of service at 1:00 pm at Hathorn Funeral Home.

"Pat" was born on November 22, 1939, in Berlin, New Hampshire. She was the daughter of Alfred Etienne and Maimi Laura Dion Parent. She was welcomed into the home by her older brother, Ronald Parent. Pat spent her early years in the northeast and later married and moved to GOD's country (Mississippi), which was her home for fifty-one years. Pat initially was a stay-at-home mom to her three sons, David and twins, Bill and Tom. She later worked in retail and ended her career at Merchants and Planters Bank in Raymond.

Pat married Paul Purvis on October 28, 1978, and together they enjoyed a blended family, including her three boys and Paul's three children, Anna, Wayne, and Ginny. Pat and Paul were active members of Bolton Baptist Church and enjoyed living on the "Pecanderosa" where they grew lush gardens and beautiful flowers, and they freely shared vegetables, meals and blooms with family and friends. Pat and Paul moved to Columbia in 2013 and became active members of First Baptist Church. At First Baptist, Pat was also a member of the choir and the Gloria Thurman Sunday School Class, and she served on the Bereavement Committee.  She also enjoyed her membership in the Calliopean Club and playing Bunko in several local groups.

After Paul's death in 2014, Pat and her "in law" Jean Conerly could frequently be found running the roads to pick up fresh peaches or pecans or to try out a new restaurant. Pat was a fabulous cook and known for her CHRISTmas candy, meat pies and delicious desserts. She also loved working in her yard and could turn a small dry root into a lush green plant with beautiful foliage and blooms.

After her diagnosis with Alzheimer's, Pat was lovingly cared for in her home by Annice Martin and Linda May until the time that she moved to Alden Pointe Assisted Living followed by a move to St. Catherine's Village.

Pat was preceded in death by her parents and husband, Paul. She is survived by her sons, David Longo (Karen), of Brandon, William Longo (Jan), of University Park, Florida, and Thomas Longo (Cinde), of Columbia; one step-son, Wayne Purvis, of Booneville, two step-daughters, Anna Purvis Layne (Terry), of Fort Smith, Arkansas, and Virginia Purvis Ogle (Ray), of Lafayette, Louisiana; one brother, Ronald Parent (Angela), of Baltimore, Maryland; and a number of loving grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, the family would be honored to know that donations were made in Pat's name to either First Baptist Church of Columbia or Southern Pines Animal Shelter in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, from which Pat adopted her beloved dog, Carrie.

Hathorn Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Friends may sign an online guest register book at www.hathornfuneralhome.com.
