Obituary

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm on Sunday, April 23, 2023 at Gates Road Baptist Church in Columbia for Mildred Lena Broom Bounds, 90, of Columbia, who passed away Friday, April 21, 2023 at her residence. Interment will be at Gates Road Cemetery in Columbia. Elder Yancey Magee and Elder Bill Morris will officiate the services. Sister Amelia Reed and Sister Kelli Robbins will provide special music. Visitation will be held from 5:00 pm until 9:00 pm on Saturday, April 22, 2023 at Hathorn Funeral Home and 1:00 pm Sunday until service time at Gates Road Baptist Church .

Mildred was the sixth child of Cecil and Eula Dudley Broom. She wa s born and raised in Marion County and lived the last fifty years there. Millie married the love of her life , Hershel Bounds in 1951 . Millie followed her husband to many different military bases until his retirement in 1969. They lived in N or fo rk, Virginia; Memphis , Tennessee; and L ong B each , California. During his deployments, Millie returned to Mississippi and helped on her parents' farm.

Millie was the last surviving charter member of Gates Road Baptist church where she was a member for 75 years.

Millie f aithfully supported her husband's missionary endeavors after he was called to the ministry in 1984. She was by his side as he served as Missionary pastor of Woodlawn Missionary Baptist Church in Caledonia, MS, Little Salem in Lucedale, MS, and Mt. Carmel in Natche z, MS. They also traveled many miles to churches and mission points in Arkansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New York, and Canada. M illie was known for her brightly colored Afghans that she crocheted while traveling. She gave them to friends, family, and donated crocheted lap rugs to nursin g homes. Millie was very outgoing and never met a strange r.

She was preceded in death by her Husband, Hershel W. Bounds; Father, Cecil Broom; Mother, Eula Dudley Broom; five Brothers, Shelton Frank Broom, Howard Broom, Jimmy Broom, Robert Cob Broom, and Horace Broom; three Sisters, Velma Martin, Georgia Nell Robbins, and Maudie Mae Broom.

She is survived by her two Brothers, Charlie Broome (Debbie) of Bassfield, MS, and Don Broom of Columbia, MS; Sister, Bonnie Maxwell of Columbia, MS; Sisters in Law Eunice Reeves of St. Amant, LA ; Jenny Broom of Columbia ; Ma rlene Bounds of T X., and Brother-in-Law, Willis Robbins.

Pallbearers will be Marty Broom, Mike Maxwell, Andy Robbins, David Robbins, Kyle Walley, and Stuart Walley.
