Funeral services will be held at 7:00pm on Wednesday, February 23, 2022, at Pine Grove United Pentecostal Church for Melvin Louis Powell, 75, of Foxworth. Visitation will begin at 5:00pm. He passed away Friday, February 18, at his home, due to complications caused by diabetes. A graveside service will be held on Thursday, at 1:00pm, at the Pine Grove Church Cemetery. Services are to be officiated by Rev. Felix Arnold, Rev. Gene Stewart, Rev. Gary Robinson, and Rev. Darrin Powell.
Mr. Powell was born August 16, 1946, in Tylertown, Mississippi, to Paul E. and Veta Price Powell. He graduated from West Marion High School and Pearl River Community College, and received his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration degree from the University of Southern Mississippi, with highest honors.
In 1969, while working in Jackson, MS, as an accountant for Hagaman, Roper, and Higginbotham, he became a Certified Public Accountant. In 1977, Mr. Powell opened his CPA office in Columbia, MS, continuing in business until his retirement in 2019.
He was an avid hunter and fisherman, whose favorite places to be were on the river and deep in the woods.
He was a lifelong member of the United Pentecostal Church International.
Mr. Powell was preceded in death by his parents.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Lynda Holmes Powell; one son, Darrin L. Powell (Marilyn) of Philadelphia, MS; two daughters, Juli Stoots (Ronnie) of Fernandina Beach, FL; Robin Ham (Darrin) of Jayess, MS; one brother, Lane Powell (Ann) of Foxworth, MS; nine grandchildren, Darra Powell, Darrin Wesley Powell, Drew Powell, Landon Stoots, Kayla Stoots, Tyler Stoots, Lana Ham, Dailyn Ham, and Ella-Kendal Ham; and two great grandchildren, Carter Watkins and Adelyn Corley.
Pallbearers will be David Michael Bozeman, Timothy Bracey, Neil Burnette, David Philley, Ben Pittman, David Pittman, Ricky Pittman, Palmer Robbins, Raymon Rowell, Gary Teston, and Darwin Wade. Honorary pallbearers will be Powell and Price first cousins, David Bozeman, Donald Bozeman, Billy Wayne Powell, Dale Powell, Richard Powell, Barron Price, Bruce Price, Earl Ray Price, Jr., Wayne Price, Weyman Price, Wilvie Price; as well as dear friends, Garyn Baughman, Boyd Carter, Charlie Miller, Von O. Patterson, and Mitcheal Thornhill.
