Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, March 14, 2025 at Hathorn Funeral Home in Columbia for Mattie Nell Hall Wood, 97, of Columbia, who passed from this life into the presence of her Lord, Jesus Christ, on Monday, March 10, 2025 at her residence surrounded by her loved ones. The family celebrates this occasion knowing that "to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord."
Interment will be at Woodlawn Cemetery in Columbia. Rev. Brian Stewart and Rev. Austin Hoyle will officiate the services. Mark Fite will provide special music.
The Wood family will be receiving friends on Friday morning beginning at 10:00 am up until the hour of service at 11:00 am at Hathorn Funeral Home.
Nell was born on January 12, 1928, in Hopewell, Copiah County, Mississippi to the late Randolph and Kate Miller Hall. In 1946 she married E. Homer Wood, Sr. from Hazelhurst. They moved to Columbia in 1958, where they lived until 1971 at which time they moved to Waynesboro. There they owned and operated Wood's Store, Inc., dba Western Auto Associate Store. Nell was known in Wayne County as being an exceptionally astute businesswoman. She and Homer retired in 1984 and moved to Fairfield Bay, Arkansas, where they enjoyed eleven years of fun on Greers Ferry Lake and Golf Course. Nell was the ladies club champion more than once.
Nell and her husband returned to Columbia in 1992, where she continued to enjoy golf and was also an avid bridge player.
She was a faithful member of the First United Methodist Church and served the church in several capacities over the years. Nell lover her Lord, Jesus Christ, and her adoring family. She was known for telling funny stories and embraced laughter.
She was preceded in death by her Husband of fifty-seven years, E. Homer Wood, Sr.; her Parents, Randolph & Kate Miller Hall; and one Son, Dr. Evan H. Wood.
Her memory will forever be cherished by her two Sons, Robert "Bob" Davis, of Carrollton, Texas, Steve Wood (Alecia), of Waynesboro; one Daughter, Kay Wood Newsom (Bob), of Columbia; one Brother, Ted Hall (Mary Agnes), of Atlanta, Georgia; thirteen Grandchildren; nineteen Great Grandchildren; and four Great Great Grandchildren.
Mrs. Wood will be carried to her final rest by those honored to serve as Pallbearers; they include Bobby Newsom, Steven Wood, Bobby Shirley, Tyler Wood, Austin Wood, and Jason Perry. Sandy Sanderson will serve as an Honorary Pallbearer.
