Obituary

Funeral services will be held at Hathorn Funeral Home on Wednesday, May 31, 2023, for Marguerite Greer Burton, 94, of Columbia, Mississippi, who passed away Wednesday, May 24, 2023. Rev. Johnny Williams will officiate the services. Interment will be at Randall Cemetery on New Union Road. Visitation will be held from 10:00 am until 12:00 pm on Wednesday May 31st, at Hathorn Funeral Home.

Born in 1928, Marguerite was the eldest of 8 children.  She was raised on the family farm located on New Union Road in Marion County, Mississippi. With the strong work ethic inspired by her parents, she completed high school at Bunker Hill and went on to attend Pearl River Jr. College.  She began her working career with General Electric in Jackson, MS. In 1947 she relocated to Washington, DC; working for the federal government .  This is where she met the love of her life Ronald H. Burton, who was currently on active duty in the US Army. After a whirlwind courtship, marriage quickly followed.

For the next 24 years, Marguerite was a dedicated Army wife traveling with her husband from New York.  They completed two tours in Texas, three tours in Oklahoma and two tours in Germany, all while raising four "horrible" children.

Following Ronald's retirement in 1972, Margie's desire to move back to Marion County and be reunited with her family and friends prompted her return to the place she had always known as home. She even dragged along that New York Yankee she had married.

For the next 50 years, mama lived an exceptional life in the one place she wanted to be.  She enjoyed quilting, crocheting, and farming to her hearts content, all while spoiling her 8 grandchildren, giving in to everything they wanted. From her grateful children, we could not have  been blessed with a more dedicated and caring mother in all the world. We love you and you are already missed.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ronald H. Burton; her parents Roxie and Cicero Greer; one son, Russell Burton; two sisters, Bobbie Haddox, Robbie "Bud" Donahue; one brother, Jerald Greer, one son-in-law James Feryl Chapman; two sisters-in-law, Beth Greer and Lizzie Greer.

She is survived by her three children, Stephenny A. Chapman; Michael Burton (Juliet), Ronnie S. Graham (Patrick); two brothers, J.V Greer, Tommy Greer; two sisters, Blanche Evanson (James L.), Sarah Broome (James); one daughter-in-law, Carolyn Burton; six grandsons, Chris Burton, Joseph "Joey" Burton, Justin Graham (Cristy), Jeffery Graham, Alex Chapman (Katherine), Nicolas Troy Chapman (Randi Rowland), two granddaughters, Ashely Thompson, April Stampley (David), seven great-grandchildren, Madison Graham, Jace Graham, Elliot Chapman, Brody Stampley, Tyler Armstrong, Gavin Armstrong, Phoenix Boone and Kinsley Boone.

Pallbearers will be Chris Burton, Joey Burton, Justin Graham, Jeffery Graham, Alex Chapman and Nicolas Troy Chapman.
