Obituary

Private graveside services for immediate family will be held at Woodlawn Cemetery in Columbia on Wednesday, February 10, 2021 for Jane S. Martin, 83, of Daphne, Alabama, who passed away Tuesday, February 2, 2021 at her residence. Rev. Reed Houston will officiate.

Born and raised in Marion County, Jane graduated from Columbia High School and was an Honor Graduate from the University of Southern Mississippi. She earned a degree in Music with an emphasis in piano.
For many years she taught piano in Columbia and was the organist / pianist at the Columbia First United Methodist Church for forty-two years. Jane also worked in the WFFF radio station office with her husband, Dave. The Culture Club, the Hilltop Garden Club, and the Chamber of Commerce sponsored Yard of the Month Committee were some of the civic activities she was involved with. In addition to her work, she loved to travel and visit garage sales and antique outlets. She had a love and talent for arts and crafts-- a talent she no doubt inherited from her mother.

Mrs. Martin was preceded in death by her Father, Waldo Simmons; her Mother, Ruth Rowley Simmons Martin; one Sister, Marilyn Simmons, one Step-Father, J.H. Martin, and two Brothers-in-law, Dr. Charles Martin of Natchez and Thomas Ginn of Columbia.

She is survived by her Husband of 61 years, David H. "Dave" Martin; one Daughter, Charlotte Pierce, of Hattiesburg; one Son, Joel Martin (Tina), of Daphne, Alabama; four Grandchildren, Mary Margaret Mitchell (Brandon), of Hattiesburg, Katherine Powers (Adam), of Manchester, New Hampshire, Trey Pierce, of Hattiesburg, Emma Martin, of Daphne; and two Sisters-in-law, Edna Ginn, of Columbia, Betty Martin Jennings, of Natchez.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials may be made to Blair E. Batson Children's Hospital in Jackson or to The Chancel Choir of First United Methodist Church in Columbia.

Hathorn Funeral Home in Columbia is in charge of the arrangements. Family and friends may sign an online guestbook at www.hathornfuneralhome.com
