A Graveside service will be held at 10:00 am on Thursday, May 28, 2026, at Woodlawn Cemetery in Columbia for Herbert Iddo Ball, Jr., 93 of Columbia, who passed away Sunday, May 17, 2026. Rev. Hunter Nicholson will officiate the services.
Herbert, a lifelong resident of Columbia, leaves behind a rich legacy of service, hard work, and deep family devotion. A proud veteran, Herbert served his country as a Staff Sergeant in the United States Air Force before returning home to the community he loved. Upon his return from the service, he partnered with his father to own and operate the Gulf gas station on Broad Street. He later transitioned to a long and dedicated career in the oil field, eventually retiring from Chevron.
Beyond his professional life, Herbert was an avid outdoorsman who found great joy and peace in the woods, especially when coon hunting. Above all his achievements, however, his greatest treasure was his family. Nothing brought a bigger smile to his face or more warmth to his heart than his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who were his absolute pride and joy.
He was preceded in death by his Wife of seventy years, Laura Mae Boyd Ball; his Parents; Herbert Iddo Ball, Sr. & Claudia Mae Wallace Ball; one Brother, Claude Wallace Ball; one Sister, Helen Ball; and one Great Grandchild, Laura Kate Ball.
He is survived by three Sons, Bobby Ball (Lula), of Columbia, Herbert Russell Ball (Kathy), of Pensacola, Florida, William O’Neal Ball (Cindy), of Indian Springs Village, Alabama; one Daughter, Angela Ball, of Columbia; nine Grandchildren, Jesse Ball, Anna Porter (Ross), Jonathan Ball (Lindsay), Benjamin Ball (Katie), Chris Ball, William Ball (Gina), Jordan Ball (Kylie), Andrew Ball (Sarah), Brandon Ball; seven Great Grandchildren; and one Great Great Grandchild.
Hathorn Funeral Home in Columbia is in charge of the arrangements. Family and friends may sign an online guestbook at www.hathornfuneralhome.com.
