A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, April 12, 2025 at Hathorn Funeral Home in Columbia for Harold Vernon Curtis, 90, of Rockville, Maryland, who passed away Thursday, February 20, 2025 at his residence. Interment will be at Woodlawn Cemetery in Columbia. Bro. Chris Turnage will officiate the services. Visitation will be held from 10:00 until 11:00 on Saturday, April 12, 2025 at Hathorn Funeral Home.
Vernon Curtis, a cherished member of the community, left an indelible mark on all who knew him. For decades, he dedicated himself to shaping young minds as Assistant Principal at Picayune Junior High School, West Marion 5 & 6 grades and nurturing spiritual growth as a Sunday school teacher at First United Methodist Church, Columbia for 25 years. His passion for the outdoors was evident in his meticulously manicured yards, where he cultivated a diverse array of plants and generously shared his skills with countless friends. Vernon also lent his creative talents to the Columbia High School Broadway Musicals, crafting elaborate sets that brought stories to life. A true friend, he was caring, giving, and supportive, always ready with a witty remark and a contagious sense of fun. Above all, Vernon's love for his family was boundless, a testament to the depth of his character.
He was preceded in death by his Son, Christopher Adam Curtis; Father, Harold Oliver Curtis; Mother, Anne Jane Brewer Curtis; Brother, Edwin Curtis; Sister, Betty Jane Shows. He is survived by his Wife, Gail Bergeron Curtis of Rockville, MD; Son, Josh Curtis (Michelle Hessel); two Grandsons, Oliver Curtis and Ian Curtis; Special Friend, Zeke Curtis; and a host of nephews, nieces, and friends.
Pallbearers will be Oliver Curtis and Ian Curtis.
