George Everett Smith

Graveside services will be held at 12:00 PM on Friday, August 14, 2026, at Woodlawn Cemetery in Columbia for George Everett Smith, 86 of Foxworth, who passed away Monday, August 10, 2026. Rev. Jimmy Bryant will officiate the services.

The Smith family will receive guests on Friday morning from 10:00 AM until 11:45 AM at Hathorn Funeral Home in Columbia.

Born on March 7, 1940, in Marion County, George was the second oldest of eight children. Throughout his life, nothing meant more to him than his family. He was a kind and gentle man with an easygoing nature that made him easy to love and easy to talk to. George was generous to his core and would gladly give someone the shirt off his back. When he wasn’t working, he enjoyed hunting and fishing and could usually be found watching football—regardless of who happened to be playing.

George devoted more than 40 years of his life to commercial trucking. He began his career with Builders Transport before spending the majority of his years on the road with U.S. Xpress, where he ultimately retired. For many years, George and his wife of 63 years, Fay, drove as a team, sharing countless miles and memories together. He later became a driver trainer and was honored multiple times as Driver Trainer of the Year. His knowledge of the highways was remarkable and remained sharp even in his final days. Family members traveling across the country could call George, tell him where they were, and he could often pinpoint their location, recommend the right exit, tell them where to find the nearest Love’s truck stop, and even suggest a good place to eat. The roads he traveled for so many years became permanently mapped in his memory, reflecting both the pride he took in his work and the sharp mind he carried throughout his life.

He was preceded in death by his Parents, Moses W. Smith and Mamie Robertson Smith; one Brother, James Smith; and three Sisters, Suzanne Ray, Betty Ladner, Patricia Davis.

He is survived by his Wife of 63 years, Faye L. Smith, of Foxworth; one Son, Stephen Smith (Tori), of Sumrall; one Daughter, Kimberly Bryant (Johnny), of Foxworth; three Sisters, Beverly Williamson (Steve), of Morgantown, Dolly Rosato (Jimmy), of Rome, Georgia, Catherine Turner, of Fort Smith, Arkansas; seven Grandchildren, Bradley Smith, Dylan S. Pitman (Bryce), Koby Graham (Cory), Kollyn Speed (Trevor), Konnor Ford, Kael Bryant, Karley Clinton (Derrik); five Great-Grandchildren, Keatyn Graham, Beckham Smith, Baker Pitman, Mary Clayton Pitman, Noa Speed; and a host of Nieces & Nephews.

Mr. Smith will be carried to his final resting place by those honored to serve as Pallbearers; Bradley Smith, Trevor Speed, Corey Thomas, Bryce Pitman, Kael Bryant, and Neal Hamilton.
