George Douglas
Brewton, Sr.
July 14, 1937 – November 27, 2023
At 2:00 pm on Friday, December 1, 2023 at Hathorn Funeral Home in Columbia there will be a celebration for the home going of Rev. George Douglas Brewton, Sr., 86, of Columbia, who passed away Monday, November 27, 2023 at Marion General Hospital. Interment will be at Foxworth Cemetery. Rev. A.D. Gammill, Jr. will officiate the services. Leatha Chapman, Donna Turley, and Brandy Stringer will provide special music. Visitation will be held from 5:00 pm until 8:00 pm on Thursday, November 30, 2023 at Hathorn Funeral Home.
Born and raised in Columbia, Rev. George served his nation faithfully in the United States Navy. Upon his return from active duty, he surrendered his life to Gospel ministry, where he was an ordained minister for over five decades with the Church of God out of Cleveland, Tennessee. He left a major impact on countless lives. He pastored several churches primarily in the northern part of the state before moving back to Marion County in 1977. He became the first Chaplain of the Marion and Walthall County jail, where he served faithfully for over 30 years. In addition to his work as a Chaplain, Rev. George was an evangelist that filled area pulpits on a regular basis. Those that knew him will always remember his devotion and dedication to the Lord, family, and friends alike.
He was preceded in death by his Wife, Linda Middleton Brewton; his Daughter, Tammie Pierce; his Father, Tommie Brewton: his Mother, Maude Baggett Anderson; and his Step-Father, Edwin "Boots" Anderson.
He is survived by his Son, George Douglas Brewton, Jr. (Patsy), of Columbia, MS; one Daughter, Yolette Broom, of Raceland, Louisiana; one Brother, James Anderson (Phillis), of Cleveland, Tennessee; two Sisters, Doris Geiger, of Bassfield, Debra Buchanan, of Cleveland, Tennessee; six Grandchildren, Haylee Pierce, of Columbia, Shadrach Pierce, of Columbia, Kyla Fortenberry, of Columbia, Laekyn Brewton, of Columbia, Danyelle Whittington, of McComb, Tiffany Broom, of McComb; four Great Grandchildren, Noah Pierce, Kais Fortenberry, both of Columbia, Tristan Whittington, Tryton Whittington, both of McComb; and two Sons-In-Law, Steve Pierce, of Columbia, Robert Broom, of McComb.
Pallbearers will be John Geiger, Robert Broom, Shadrach Pierce, Steve Pierce, Tristan Whittington, and Ralph Franks.
