September 7, 1939 – October 21, 2023
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, October 27, 2023 for Charles Patrick Sanford, 84, of Columbia, who passed away Saturday, October 21, 2023. Interment will be at Woodlawn Cemetery in Columbia. Rev. Caleb Cangelosi and Rev. Hunter Nicholson will officiate the services. Mrs. June Williams will provide special music. Visitation will be held from 9:00 am until 11:00 am on Friday, October 27, 2023 at Columbia Presbyterian Church.
Charles Patrick Sanford was born in Jackson, Mississippi to Virgil and Rowena Sanford.
He graduated from Central High School and attended Millsaps College, where he played on the football team (and was proudly part of the infamous Millsaps vs. MC football brawl on the field!). He later transferred to the University of Southern Mississippi, from which he received both his bachelor's and master's degrees and was a member and president of the Kappa Sigma fraternity.
Charlie was a member of the Marine Corps Reserves and enjoyed playing handball for many years while living in Jackson.
He worked for the Social Security Disability office in Jackson, and later, as head counselor at the Columbia Training School until his retirement.
Charlie loved all things college sports, and he especially loved the Golden Eagles (SMTTT!). He was an avid gardener and kept fresh flowers for his family to enjoy throughout the year. He was a man of strong faith, active in serving the Lord through his membership at Columbia Presbyterian Church for many years. A devoted family man, his wife, four daughters, and grandchildren were the light of his life; his family was his number one priority.
He was preceded in death by his Father, Virgil C. Sanford; Mother, Rowena S. Sanford; one Brother, William Sanford; two Sisters, Mary McIntire, Charlotte Comeaux.
He is survived by his Wife of 42 years, Beth P. Sanford; four Daughters, Julia Fortenberry (Nakia), Elizabeth Smith (Joey), Anna Tufts (Cameron), Katie Sanford; twelve Grandchildren and one Great Grandchild.
Pallbearers will be Nakia Fortenberry, Joey Smith, Cameron Tufts, David Warner, Winfield Tufts, Sr., Rickey Fortenberry. Honorary Pallbearers will be, Larry Hancock, John Swain and Dr. Doug Sanford.
