Angela Pope Reid, 61, passed away on October 19, 2016. She was born on February 1, 1955, to James E. and Billie C. Pope. She graduated from Columbia Academy and the University of Southern Mississippi. A devoted wife and mother, Angela taught English and Creative Writing for 27 years. From an early age, Angela had a voracious appetite for learning, reading every book she could find. Her passion for literature was matched by her love for the students she taught. For her, education was not an end to itself but a journey that was enhanced by the people who embarked on it with her. Although she lost the battle with cancer, the joyful and humble service to others that characterized her life remained with her to the end. In the final days of her life, family, friends, and students gathered and testified to her life of service and prayerful dependence on the Lord Jesus Christ. While some may point to the impact she made on them during her lifetime, her legacy can only be measured by the generations of students that continue to pick up another book, try their hands at writing a little poetry, and most of all those who follow in her footsteps by seeking to live life in service to others. She is survived by her husband of over forty-four years, John Reid; her father, James E. Pope; her mother, Billie C. Pope; her sister, Ginger Pope Pierce (Glynn); her daughter, Brittany E. Reid; her son, Dr. J. Nicholas Reid (Blair); three grandsons: James Cooper Reid, Joseph Noah Reid, and Caleb Nicholas Reid; and one granddaughter, Hannah Elizabeth Reid. She also leaves several nieces and nephews. Pallbearers were Grant Terrell Pierce, Gannon Pope Pierce, Jeffrey Glenn Reid, Dr. Andrew S. Middleton, Dr. Brett D. Robbins, and Matthew Thomas. Funeral services were held at First Presbyterian Church in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, on October 22, 2016, with Dr. Sean Michael Lucas presiding. Interment was at Pope Cemetery in Columbia, Mississippi. Memorial donations may be made to First Presbyterian Church, 4901 Hardy Street, Hattiesburg, Mississippi 39402, or to the McCullough Sims Reid English Award, Columbia Academy, 1548 Highway 98 East, Columbia, Mississippi 39429.
