Funeral services will be held at 10:00 am on Saturday, May 6, 2023 at Calvary Baptist Church in Columbia for Albert Morris Sweatt Sr., 82, of Columbia, who passed away Monday, May 3, 2023 at his residence. Interment will be at Woodlawn Cemetery in Columbia. Rev. Millard Moak will officiate the services. Sherri Turnage, Aaron McKenzie, and Men's Ensemble will provide special music. Visitation will be held from 5:00 pm until 8:00 pm on Friday, May 5, 2023 at Calvary Baptist Church.
Born in Clarksdale on February 2, 1941, Morris was an accomplished musician, attorney and MENSA member. He obtained a Bachelors of Music Education and a Masters of Music from the University of Southern Mississippi and Northwestern University, before furthering his education with a Doctor of Jurisprudence degree from the Mississippi College School of Law.
He devoted decades to teaching music at the collegiate level throughout the state, and he also participated with the American Federation of Musicians, the Mississippi Band Masters Association, the Gulf Coast Symphony (U.S.M. Symphony Orchestra), the Swing Machine Band, the Little River Big Band, and the Jimmy Mullen Orchestra.
Once Morris earned his law degree in 1983, he and Dorothy were married in 1984. They settled in Columbia in 1985, where he ran a private practice, served as public defender and later became the longtime Assistant District Attorney of the 15 th District.
Of all the accolades he wore, Morris wanted to be identified most for the love he held for his family and his Lord. He was a faithful member of Calvary Baptist Church in Columbia, where he served as a deacon, Sunday School Teacher, and a member of the Sanctuary Choir.
He was preceded in death by his father, William Mansel Sweatt; mother, Effie King Sweatt; brother, Roy Sweatt; sister, Wanda Sweatt.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Merritt Sweatt of Columbia, MS; two sons, Sonny Albert Sweatt, Jr. (Elizabeth) of Jackson, MS and Tuan La (Paula) of Rocksprings, TX; daughter, Shauna La of Los Angeles, CA; seven Grandchildren, Sky Sweatt, Eliot Sweatt, Raffa Sweatt, John La, Owen La, Aubrey La and Rosie La.
Pallbearers will be Sonny Sweatt, Tuan La, Bill Boutwell, Lavella Merritt, Mark Broom, and Randy Dyess. Honorary pallbearers will be Sky Sweatt, Owen La, John La, and Deacons of Calvary Baptist Church.
